Project Biosphere Communities-Responsible Communities, Biosphere Reserve of Príncipe Island

ORGANISATION BACKGROUND AND LOCAL CONTEXT

In 2012, UNESCO declared the island of Príncipe in São Tomé and Prínci-pe a Biosphere Reserve. Considering the socioeconomic framework of this island, the fact that it is now a Biosphere Reserve boosts the sustai-nable way of life of its people, allowing for the restructuring and develo-ping of the island’s main economic activities and taking advantage of excellent weather conditions combined with a unique history, culture and scenery. Biosphere Communities - Responsible Communities is a project aimed at raising awareness of the Príncipe Island communities for the responsible waste management, by encouraging separation, reuse and recycling as much as possible. This initiative is being imple-mented in three pilot- communities: Roça Sundy, Roça Porto Real and Praia das Burras. We expect to transform these communities in recy-cling places, where waste is separated, recycled and transformed, not only cleaning the island, but also creating employment opportunities and boosting entrepreneurship.
